Notice of Postponement of the 38th Joint Meeting of PHILJEC and JPECC

The 38th Joint Meeting of the Philippines-Japan Economic Cooperation Committee, Inc. (PHILJEC) and its Japanese counterpart, Japan-Philippines Economic Cooperation Committee (JPECC) will take place on March 12, 2020 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the New World Makati Hotel. 

This year’s theme is “Promoting Philippines-Japan business through Innovation and Digitalization” and will welcome executives and representatives from top Filipino and Japanese companies. Hon. Ernesto M. Pernia, Secretary of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), and Mr. Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, Chairman of Ayala Corporation, are scheduled to deliver their keynote addresses during the event. It will be followed by a short Q&A. 

There will be two plenary sessions focusing on different industries. Session 1, Instituting Innovation in Industries,” will focus on logistics, finance, real estate, and retail. Session 2, Promoting the Development of other Industries,” will focus on human resource training. It will also present updates on the development of smart cities like the New Clark City and will also tackle the issue of increasing the number and value of investments in manufacturing industries. 

Guest speakers include, among others, Mr. Edwin Bautista, President, Union Bank; Mr. Nobuhide Hayashi, Senior Advisor, Mizuho Bank, Ltd.; and Ms. Doris Magsaysay-Ho, President & CEO, Magsaysay Group of Companies.

PHILFEJA to Host Symposium on Fourth Industrial Revolution

PHILFEJA, in cooperation with Asia Japan Alumni (ASJA) International and the ASEAN Council of Japan Alumni (ASCOJA) will host the symposium “ASEAN-Japan Relations Caught on FIRe” on February 7, 2020 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Makati Diamond Residences, Makati City. 

The symposium is about the state and direction of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (FIRe) in the context of strategic bilateral and multilateral partnerships between Japan and ASEAN. It aims to spur discussions and an exchange of views on the impact, opportunities, and challenges of FIRe particularly for ASEAN.

Renowned international speaker on FIRe, Dr. Yoshinori Fujikawa, Ph.D. and Former Governor of the Philippine Board of Investments, Hon. Henry Co. will be the guest keynote speakers for the symposium. There will be three sessions where speakers from ASEAN and Japan will present papers on topics related to Science & Technology, Human Resource and Ecosystems, Connectivity, Internet of Things, and the Integrated Society.

PHILJEC & PJS Members Attend 45th ASEAN-Japan Business Meeting in Tokyo

Headed by Mr. Gerard B. Sanvictores, the Chairman of the Philippines-Japan Economic Cooperation Committee, Inc., PHILJEC and PJS delegates attended the 45th ASEAN-Japan Business Meeting held at The Imperial Hotel, Tokyo from December 12 to 14, 2019. This year’s meeting, hosted by the Japan Association of Corporate Executives (Keizai Doyukai), focused on the theme “New Reality and Opportunity for ASEAN and Japan in the Face of New Global Trends.” More than 150 business leaders with diverse backgrounds gathered to discuss the impact of digitalization on industries and the new opportunities arising from such disruptive changes.

The meeting officially started with a welcome dinner on December 12 with greetings from Mr. Hashimoto Keiichiro, Vice Chairman and President, Keizai Doyukai. Mr. Hiyashi Nobuhide, the 45th AJBM Chairman, gave the welcome toast to guests that evening.

The first plenary session, held on the morning of December 13, presented two keynote speeches. Mr. Imai Yasuyuki, Senior Vice Officer and COO, Softbank (Softbank Business Development Strategy in Asia), talked about “Technology Utilization Japan’s New Challenge—Position and Relationship with ASEAN.” After Mr. Yasuyuki’s presentation, Mr. Konuma Yasuyuki, Director & Senior Executive Officer, Tokyo Stock Exchange gave his speech on “Market Cooperation and Mutual Growth of Japan and ASEAN.” A Q&A followed each keynote presentation.

Shortly after lunch was served, the discussion among ASEAN-Japan Startups commenced. Officially titled “Growth Strategy of ASEAN – Japan Startups Expanding Globally,” the panel discussion was moderated by Mr. Mashita Naoaki, CEO & Founder, V-Cube and included panelists:

  • Mr. Izumo Mitsuru, CEO & founder, Euglena
  • Mr. Ota Yoshihiro, Head of CEO Office, Axelspace Corporation
  • Mr. Taniguchi Naoji, CEO & CTO, Holoeyes
  • Mr. Jeffrey Foo, CEO & Mr. Sean Ong, Regional Group Director for Japan & Korea, LIV3LY
  • Mr. Prasetio Erlimus, CEO, PT Compro Kotak Inovasi
  • Mr. Honma Masahiko, General Partner, Incubate Fund

Several Breakout Sessions were held from two to four in the afternoon. Mr. Watanabe Kazufumi, Vice President, Amazon Japan, moderated the session “Connecting the Markets and Enhancing Opportunities—Digital changes consumer marketE-commerce).” Mr. Hachiuma Fuminao, President & CEO, J-OIL MILLS, INC. led the session “Upgrading Industries—Digital Changes Industry Infrastructure and Value Chains (manufacturing & human resources), while Dr. Asano Toshio, Former President and CEO, Asahi Kasei Corporation, moderated the session “Enhancing Well-Being for All—Smart, Sustainable and Quality Solutionssmart city solutions, energy & environment, mobility.”

The second plenary session followed the Breakout Sessions and provided reports from those sessions and the opportunity for a Q&A. Mr. Hayashi and Mr. Hashimoto gave the wrap up and closing remarks. A closing dinner and cocktails followed, which also served as a networking opportunity for the participants.

December 14 was reserved for the AJBM Steering Committee Meeting.

PJFF Awards Long-term Employees in 2019 Christmas Party

The holiday spirit came early for PJFF staff as they celebrated their Christmas party on November 30, 2019 at the PJFF office in Makati. Two other affiliate organizations—Nihongo Center Foundation (NCF) and The Philippine Institute of Japanese Language & Culture Foundation, Inc. (PIJLC) also joined the event.

One of the highlights of this year’s party was the awarding of certificates to long-term employees of PJFF, NCF/PIJLC. The service awardees:

  • Amelita Alejandro, Head Accountant, PJFF – 10 years
  • Glenda Ferma, Administrator, PJFF – 27 years
  • Jovita Sancho, Full-time Nihongo Teacher, NCF/PIJLC – 11 years
  • Ma. Lynn Canlas, Building Supervisor, PJFF – 11 years
  • Ronilo Dincol, Maintanance Staff, PJFF – 12 years

The staff enjoyed games, a raffle draw, and intermission numbers in between the awarding of certificates. They also exchanged Christmas gifts during the event.

PJLA Members Celebrate Christmas in Laguna

PJLA members celebrated Christmas ahead of the rush as they headed to the Yazaki-Torres Guesthouse in Calamba, Laguna for their Christmas Party on December 10, 2019. This year’s holiday celebration was hosted by PJLA President, Dra. Nora A. Torres from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and welcomed more than 20 guests. 

To set the jolly mood of the party, the ladies gathered around and sang Christmas songs such as Silent Night, Pasko na Sinta Ko, and All I want for Christmas Is You with Maestra Teresita Santos playing the piano. A splendid buffet was served and the ladies enjoyed their time by playing various games and exchanging Christmas gifts during the party.
